Description: Job Summary/objective

Electronics Technician -at the U.S. Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA) Reagan Test Site (RTS) in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Under the supervision of the Chief Electronics Technician, the employee will be responsible for surveying, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of scientific instrumentation and communications systems including work with solid state weather radar (one of the few operational solid state systems planned for use). Experience in radar maintenance and repair is critical; work with weather radars is preferred. This position requires relocation to Kwajalein Island. Candidates for this position must be willing to be on call periodically outside normal work hours to include nighttime, weekend, and holiday hours. All candidates must be in good physical condition such as to not require routine, extensive medical treatment.

Kwajalein Island is considered a remote location, with somewhat limited medical and dental facilities, much like any Small Town USA, but located in the Pacific. The usual, small-town mix of retail and recreation exists on Kwajalein. This includes stores, theaters, library, bowling alley, snack bar, and a bar. In addition, the island is equipped to take full advantage of golfing, biking, organized softball and soccer leagues, and superb fishing, diving, sailing, and boating opportunities of the near equatorial-ocean. The island boasts a yacht club, fishing club, diving club, running club and rental outlet for boats and equipment. Island population numbers around 1200; these are divided near equally between single and family individuals. Kwajalein is considered overseas employment by the IRS, and those employed there receive significant tax benefits. Meals and housing is provided to all single status employees. Additional voluntary insurance coverages are available such as life, critical illness and accident insurance at the employee's expense.

Qualifications/Education Requirements
  • Strong background in electronics: AS/AA or certificate from an accredited college or vocational training program (electronics), or military education desired.
  • Training and experience in the use of test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power meters, network analyzers, and spectrum analyzers for instrument repair and calibration is desirable. Knowledge and experience with Doppler weather radars is desirable.
  • Background in telemetry, analog and digital circuitry, PC, UNIX and Linux operating systems highly desirable.
  • Experience in surveying, installation, maintenance, and repair of scientific instrumentation, especially weather instrumentation, and communications systems required.
  • Experience in Computer Aided Design software desirable.
  • Must be US citizen.
  • A minimum of two-years work experience desired.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a secret security clearance.
Essential Functions
  • Maintains and repairs a wide variety of scientific instrumentation and communications systems, indoors and outdoors in a remote location.
  • Position requires use of safety harness, for climbing and working at heights.
  • Must have the ability to work at a minimum of 20 feet above surface as needed and ride bicycle for travel.

  • Working in a tropical climate with wet season and dry seasons and little temperature variation between.
  • Work performed is both inside and outside work.

This is an unaccompanied position. USAG-KA hosts a wide range of recreational facilities and activities including a library, stores, theaters, a scuba diving club, and community sports leagues. The IRS considers Kwajalein as overseas employment, and employees will receive significant tax benefits.
